When the math competition results were delivered to, Ont., everyone was stunned to see that Grade 8 student Eugene Shiu beat out 11,159 students to finish first place in the world.

The Caribou organization aims to make math fun and foster a love of mathematics. Its competition, typically held six times per year over two days, sees students solve puzzles using math, rather than answer knowledge-based questions.

Ms. DiNardo, Eugene鈥檚 teacher, enthusiastically congratulated her student for his intelligence and diligence.

鈥淲inning the Caribou Cup is no small feat, and Eugene鈥檚 rank is a true testament to his outstanding abilities and hard work,鈥 said Ms. DiNardo. 鈥淗e demonstrates courage and perseverance when faced with challenging questions and is conscientious and meticulous while verifying his mathematics, ensuring his success.鈥

Caribou prohibits using calculators during competitions and instead challenges students to rely solely on their mental ability to solve complex mathematical problems using only scrap paper, a pencil and sheer determination.

The Mathletes team at All Saints has an excellent track record of developing strong mathematical skills in its student members, and for Eugene, it鈥檚 something he truly enjoys.

鈥淏eing part of the Mathletes team has been an unforgettable experience so far because we support each other throughout the journey,鈥 said Eugene Shiu. 鈥淧articipating in the competition was an exciting experience, as it pushed me to give my best effort. After hearing the results, I had an unforgettable moment of pride.鈥

For All Saints Principal Mr. Nardo, his pride went far beyond Eugene鈥檚 Caribou Cup result itself.

鈥淓ugene is not only a top math student but also an inspiration to his peers. He shares his God-given gifts as a talented pianist in our school choir and continues to be a role model for others,鈥 said Mr. Nardo. 鈥淲e are also deeply grateful to our dedicated staff members, like Ms. DiNardo, for providing our students with so many opportunities to shine.鈥

Eugene鈥檚 achievement at the Caribou Cup is an example of the dedication, perseverance and academic excellence that the 麻豆果冻传媒 students display every day. Congratulations to Eugene Shiu and the entire All Saints鈥 CES community!
